Hummingbird nesting

This gallery follows the development of two hummingbird nests, one successful and one not, at the University of California Riverside Botanic Garden during the Spring of 2007. At the end of the gallery is the start of the 2008 and 2009 nesting seasons.

  • Hard to see the nest but it's in the lower right branch right above the lip of the pot in the background. It's tiny, exposed, and vulnerable. The hummingbird is on the nest in this shot.
  • The next day the chicks were gone.
  • Abandoned nest
  • Nest 2, different mom. This one was much more hidden and less accessible in a redwood tree above a little arroyo, away from the main path.
