Action Photography: If it moves, I'll shoot it

  1. The Toni Project

THE TONI PROJECT

I have always known that my sister was famous, although perhaps not well-known to others. She sat on Einstein’s lap, after all, and I have no doubt that she was there when the theory of relativity was discovered, the space program launched, the great novels written, the classic works of arts created, and when the seedling ideas for medical breakthroughs were hatched. However, up until now, her accounts of encounters with the people that have shaped our history and our lives have been discounted due to lack of proof. A few years ago, in my grandmother’s belongings, I discovered an old photo of Toni with Einstein, and The Toni Project was born. The project is dedicated to the pursuit of truth in uncovering the scientific documentation and photographic proof of Toni’s influence on famous personages throughout history.

The lost photos from the 2006 year of The Project have been restored. They were dedicated to Toni's cultural and musical outreach with Gertrude Stein, Alice Toklas, the Weavers, Pete Seeger and Lead Belly. The 2007 efforts were dedicated to Toni's outdoor explorer years, 2008 depicted Toni's early efforts toward negotiating world peace, and, in honor of the election and presidential succession, 2009 reminded us of Toni's influence on early American history and presidents. The finds for the 2010 revealed Toni's contributions to Mid-Century Modernism, including the Beat Generation and Pop Counterculture. In 2011, we explored Toni's influence on the public library system in the United States; in 2012, her contributions to revolutions, real, technological or otherwise; and in 2013, her exploration of the Western Hemisphere. The tenth and final year is dedicated to Toni and U.S. history and culture. The official project's non-existent funding has ended and the project will be taking a hiatus while preparing a final report and securing future support. Additional photos are added periodically as they are uncovered.

  • An early promotional photo when Toni was still with the band.
  • Toni, Sir Edmund Hillary, and sherpa before the ascent of Everest.
  • Toni, Sir Peary, and unidentified helper on the North Pole expedition
  • Toni on the Shackleton expedition.
  • Toni, Shackleton, and unidentified men and dogs.
  • Toni, Jane Goodall, and unidentified chimpanzee in Gombi.
  • Toni at the Yalta Conference (she had finished an exciting snowball fight with the group; note that the Russian officer on the right is wondering if she has any more snowballs stashed behind Churchill).
  • Toni on the USS Missouri with Fleet Admiral Nimitz and crew

They are awaiting the Japanese envoys. In the meantime, Toni led the group in a rousing game of Categories, using P-E-A-C-E as the main word. The officer standing in the front row, fifth from the right, reportedly won the game.
  • Toni and Eleanor Roosevelt at a "My People" broadcast devoted to African Americans

Toni was reporting on the event for her first grade class. She had just asked everyone how to spell "hegemony," and a brief moment of thought ensued.
  • Toni Crossing the Delaware

This image is the original pen and ink sketch used for the final painting. Toni had learned a lot about American geography at school by coloring in maps. Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze made the preliminary sketch while Toni was helping Washington chart the waters of the Delaware. Of course the men made her wear a life vest for safety. Gottlieb Leutze later painted Toni out for the final version, due to some misguided notion that boats should not mix genders.
  • Toni and Lincoln at Gettysburg. They practiced his speech together, while she got together the necessary references and citations. The person on the left is Allan Pinkerton of the secret service (not so secret then), and Toni just passed some notes to Major General John McClernand in case he has to cue the President on the next part of the speech.
  • Toni and Teddy

Toni was a long-time friend of Teddy Roosevelt. In his youth, they rode together often, and Toni helped him cultivate his love of nature. She later introduced him to her old friend, John Muir, resulting in the establishment of the U.S. Park Service.
  • "Toni Thinking" as interpreted by Andy Warhol. This was the initial inspiration for the Marilyn Monroe multiples painting, clearly evident here. Warhol used the Toni Thinking painting to experiment with colors, silk screening and printing processes, and develop his future style as an avant garde pop artist. And Toni, of course, became an underground pop icon.
  • Andy Warhol was so excited (can you tell?) about his interpretation of "Toni Thinking" that he created an early multi-media exhibit, connected it with an extension cord, and walked it over to the power plant to show Toni. She was on break.

This frequent contributor to world history would of course be honored to mis-inform the youth of today. Toni

Every year, Rick. The project has an annual reveal of what was found during the time between Toni's current birthdays. This year we are exploring her role in early American history . . . or maybe ancient Rome. The Board of Directors has not made a decision yet. Let me know if you have any suggestions or leads to new discoveries.
