  • Third generation<br /> <br /> (June 24) The great-granddaughter of Don Augustín on the day of a fiesta. She is now grown and married. Sigh.
  • Read the instructions<br /> <br /> (June 23) Same family, two generations down, also circa 1989. These are the grandsons of the gentleman from yesterday, the new patriarchs. They are reading the instructions for installing a solar panel. They are also the family that have been the portal for conservation and research activities in the area.
  • The Patriarch<br /> <br /> (June 22) I'm slowly scanning/digitizing some of the photographs from when I lived in Mexico. This was taken the summer of 1988 or the winter of 1989 with a point and shoot Olympus camera that survived many adventures. It is of Don Augustín, who lived in this area of northern Mexico all his life. He was 10 when Pancho Villa's troops came through the hacienda on their way to take Torreón and Gómez Palacio. His mother hid him under the bed so that the Villistas wouldn't take him with them. I learned a lot of the region's history from this man, but a lot was lost as neither I nor his grandsons always understood him.

  • Las Torrecillas (The Little Towers)<br /> <br /> This is the very center of the Chihuahuan Desert, also known as the Bolsón de Mapimí and where went to study how ranchers and researchers perceived environmental conservation and appropriate land use. I spent most of my time looking for people! If the light looks odd, that's typical of that area. It's also known as The Zone of Silence, and I am its lone myth debunker: <br /> <a href="http://www.planeta.com/planeta/97/1197zone.html">http://www.planeta.com/planeta/97/1197zone.html</a><br /> 20 years later, and I still receive hate mail for it.

    Thanks, Rick! I never knew that. I've passed by that frog many, many times over the last ten years on my way to and from Prescott, but I never knew it was that much of a landmark.

    If you get up close to the Frog you will see a little plate stating that it is a memorial to Jerry Owens (Frog). See link http://www.rickwillis-photos.com/gallery/1774882#88987822
