Young dog about to do a demo

  • Young dog about to do a demo
  • Just for a sense of scale, here is the start of a run. Five sheep are brought to the post on the left for the start. This is taken with a 200mm telephoto, and the post is about a quarter mile out. The herders hold the sheep there until the competing dog picks them up for the start of the run. The competing shepherd remains at the start and can guide the dog only through verbal commands or a whistle. The dogs usually go waaaay behind the sheep first and pick them up coming towards the start (where this photo was taken).
  • After picking the sheep up at the start post, the dog must herd them through the first gate.

  • Field chess -- coming into the start area after the first gate.
  • Then the dog has to bring them around the post where it started and where the shepherd has remained.

  • Then they have to take the sheep back out through the first gate, make a right turn and take them toward a second gate.

  • These are range ewes, not so cooperative and pretty damn fast.
  • The last gate. After this the dog must turn the sheep again back to the start.
  • In general, the sheep aren't too wild about the last turn and want to go back to where they started.
  • They're not afraid to challenge the dog.
  • It takes a seasoned dog not to be intimidated. The ewes had no problem in bowling over a few young dogs or intimidating some of the less range-wise dogs.
  • This group is back under control.
  • Once back at the starting area, the shepherd and sheepdog must separate out two sheep from the flock.
