Red alert
(Sept. 19) Our ground squirrels are much scruffier than Thusie's tree squirrels. This guy has a bad hair day with his tail:

on September 21, 2006Yeah, I know. When we go to Orange County, I am amazed at the difference in light (and temperature) in such a short distance. I think you get more of the moisture and marine layer air there, and we get more of the desert air from Cajon and Palm Springs (and smog from LA).

on September 21, 2006It amazes me that you live in Riverside, not so very far from me in Orange, and your light is so much more "desert" looking. I have it in my mind that you live in Arizona or somewhere!!! We have ground squirrels, too. Ours are spotted. Cute little guy...looks like one of those little reddish scrub brushes!!! You do control the light very well...difficult to work with, no doubt.

on September 20, 2006There's little cover above ground for these guys. They hang out in the cactus a lot, but they are definitely nervous. The light, well, welcome to Riverside. Soft light, it ain't. Not enough moisture.

on September 20, 2006I believe I saw these guys in San Diego last winter (?) for the first time. They were very cute and very nervous. They were nearly always basking on a rock in the sun in the heat of the day. Nice shot in a very harsh lighting environment with a very difficult subject.

on September 20, 2006yes, squinty harsh light, you managed well there. very different sq- don't suppose I've seen any of these ..
Thusie
on September 20, 2006:-))) Looks like some dirt on his face and a bad hair day. Boy you do a good job with the light you have, not easy at all!

on September 19, 2006That lighting almost makes me want to squint - Kind of reminds me of the light I had when I took shots of the herd of horses- super - hard to deal with.
He is cute.
