  • Bow before greatness<br />
<br />
(Sept. 9) This is not the dog that won, but any dog that got the Meeker sheep's respect was worthy of a bow. These range sheep have the reputation of the most difficult in the world, and the semifinals of the trials showed this. The ewes routinely challenged and bowled over the dogs and outright intimidated them. It took a range dog to get range respect and this dog did so. <br />
<br />
I will post more on the sheepdog trials tomorrow (Sept. 12) in a separate gallery:<br />
 <a href="http://chaosgraphics.smugmug.com/gallery/1882483">http://chaosgraphics.smugmug.com/gallery/1882483</a><br />
We just got back tonight late after a long and difficult day of traveling.
  • Welcome to Meeker, CO<br />
<br />
(Sept. 8) Actually this was Sept. 9, but the 8th was spent traveling. This is the first thing we saw at the Meeker Sheepdog trials. Here is information on the event:<br />
 <a href="http://www.meekersheepdog.com/">http://www.meekersheepdog.com/</a><br />
Apart from the ticket I got following my mother and her friend going 80 mph on the way up there, this was one of the most beautiful ranching communities and valleys I have seen in a long time.
  • Cactus bloom<br />
<br />
(Sept. 7) I don't know what kind of flowers these are, but they come off of a very tall, stalky cactus. As far as I can tell, the flowers bloom for one day. Wish I could have put some bugs being bad in there for y'all. <br />
<br />
I'll be on vacation for the next four days. I don't know if I'll be able to post while I'm gone, so I'll catch up with the daily community next week.
  • Step off into the world<br />
<br />
(Sept. 6) I was walking around downtown at dusk, trying to find something for the dailies, when I came across this young lady and a friend playing at the MLK statue. I wish it were sharper, but I'm glad I got something of these young ladies. They were having such a good time interacting with the sculpture. Right after I got there, their family told them to quit foolin' around and come along.<br />
<br />
The other thing I came across were young boys using the courthouse stairs as skate ramps:<br />
 <a href="http://chaosgraphics.smugmug.com/gallery/1841037/1/93575976">http://chaosgraphics.smugmug.com/gallery/1841037/1/93575976</a>
  • Just hanging out<br />
<br />
(Sept. 5) These tendrils and their shadows were the only things that looked crisp and fresh and bright this morning. The rest of us living things are hot, cranky, and miserable. I just read that the predicted high is 106 degrees.
  • Mirage<br />
<br />
(Sept. 4) Soooo hot and humid today. The only thing I shot was this irrigation water running off on a wall. We were on our way back from a long walk and it was the one cool thing I saw all morning.
  • Everyone's got an opinion<br />
<br />
(Sept. 3) John's Chicago taxi went so fast that it ended up on the west coast in a Labor Day cruise, where spectators agreed that it was a "bitchin' ride."<br />
<br />
Here are some other photos from today:<br />

  • Godzilla of the Desert<br />
<br />
(Sept. 2) Another lizard shot. It's hot already and not much is stirring. Everyone is holing up for a scorcher day. Here's what the morning walk looked like from Gus' point of view:<br />

  • Medicine Cat<br />
(or)<br />
A Hair of the Cat that Bit You<br />
(or)<br />
What's in YOUR Cabinet?<br />
<br />
(Sept. 1) Guess what I found in my cabinet this morning? This little bundle of opinionated fur, Gypsy Rose. It's no use trying to get her out of there. She'll fight tooth and nail, first as a game and then for real.
  • Don't move a muscle . . . <br />
<br />
. . . until I figure out how to shoot this.<br />
<br />
(Aug. 31) My first full month in the dailies. Yay. And phew! I was playing around with shutter speed and aperture today. I learned that f8 works if the object isn't very wide, doesn't move, and is in the shade. I took this shot 3 ways -- automatic sports setting (too dark), shutter priority at 1/1250 (totally black), and this on aperture priority at f8 -- with a telephoto lens at 200mm, handheld. Thankfully Gus was mesmerized by a lizard and otherwise occupied. I did use a little bit of curves -- very little, but too much? There is a little bit of rosiness in these mourning doves.<br />
<br />
I also found that f8 works okay for very flat objects, but not for distant objects which need a deeper DOF:<br />
 <a href="http://chaosgraphics.smugmug.com/gallery/1368163/2/92007638">http://chaosgraphics.smugmug.com/gallery/1368163/2/92007638</a><br />
 <a href="http://chaosgraphics.smugmug.com/gallery/1368163/2/92007696">http://chaosgraphics.smugmug.com/gallery/1368163/2/92007696</a><br />
I was wondering, because I shot some of the rodeo shots at f8, and I was kind of wondering how it would do as a "go to" aperture for nature shots as well.
  • Ready for a shower?<br />
<br />
(Aug. 30) So I'm caught up now. I debated about whether to crop this or not -- it's a huge crop. I kind of liked the perspective of the bigger image focused through the fence bars. However, this is more recognizable as a Phoebe, and I'm a little bit pleased that it is still kinda sharp, even though it was a manual focus and handheld (and I was stomping on Gus' leash too). Here's the uncropped version:<br />
 <a href="http://chaosgraphics.smugmug.com/gallery/1367522/7/91782005">http://chaosgraphics.smugmug.com/gallery/1367522/7/91782005</a>
  • Run away?<br />
<br />
(Aug. 29) Okay I'm catching up here. I've been trying to get the bizillion rodeo photos up and available and am behind on dailies. This was indeed taken yesterday, Aug. 29. The bunny saw me and I saw it, but Gus, rocket scientist that he isn't, hadn't cued into it yet, which is the only reason I got anything. A moment later it was gone.
  • Rider down<br />
<br />
(Aug. 27) Another background photo from the Norco rodeo, this time from yesterday (Sunday). I haven't looked at all the images yet, and I may switch this one out. I include it for now because it had all the elements that I noticed behind the chutes: waiting, anxiety, vigilance, concern, and action. One of the bronc riders hit the ground hard, and the pickup rider was off to get the horse out of the way.
  • Two Generations<br />
<br />
(Aug. 28) This is also from Aug. 27 -- didn't have anything for Monday! The boy was the son of one of the competitors. Unfortunately, I think it was his father that was hurt in the bronc riding (see yesterday's photo). Here he is watching the calf ropers. The rodeo announcer is behind him.
  • !@#$%^&* Cactus Wren, Part III<br />
<br />
(Aug. 26) After four months of mocking me, here is the cactus wren ON a cactus. But he just popped on, squawked at me, and left. No time to drop Gus' leash and adjust the camera . . . so it's not so sharp and the background isn't blurred enough. This will be an ongoing saga.
  • Will the real cowboy stand up?<br />
<br />
(Aug. 25) I was asked to take some background photos of a local rodeo. I came across one of the rodeo pickup riders getting ready using the chrome off his trailer. The light or strut is distracting, I know. Shortly after this, night fell . . . and I was out of ISO and aperture abilities.
  • Fast food<br />
<br />
(Aug. 24) Bummer, I didn't get the wings stopped on this. I include it because I like the tobacco tree blooms. The hummer gave me a very public reprimand for disturbing its breakfast. They are very territorial and aggressive here.
  • Sunbath<br />
<br />
(Aug. 23) Summer living must be good, because the lizards are just plain fat. This could be a gravid female, but I don't know enough about lizards to figure it out. In any case, this lizard was high enough out of reach to feel safe enough to give Gus the stinkeye.
  • Waiting . . . and not patiently<br />
<br />
(Aug. 22) The temperature went up today and all the urban wildlife went still. I had to resort to shooting myself waiting for it to cool down so I could go outside. It looks like I could use a little less sun and a little more sunblock.
