Good to the last drop . . .
(June 20) . . . and I saw where she has a nest too, with chicks in it, well hidden in another redwood tree. She's pretty fierce. I saw her chase away three other hummers.

on June 21, 2007Great capture, a neighbor of ours gets a lot of humming birds, and has no problem allowing me to take shots of them however all her feeders seem to be in the shade all the time, making it difficult to get a good shot.

on June 21, 2007Kim -- I've just been lucky this year. I've planted a lot of Salvias, which the hummers love, and there are a lot of native plants and hummer-attracting plants on campus and at the Botanic Gardens. With the number of hummers around, I think I should find more nests, not less. However, I have found that most of the time, the hummers sit on the ends of the tree branches where they can survey and guard their territories. When they go deep into a tree's foliage, there may be a nest. The females often circle and hover around the area for a while, checking everything out (including me) before they dart in to the nest.
