(June 30) I've been participating in the Daily Photos Community for a year and it's time to take a break. I've gotten to the point where I am forcing myself to take shots rather than challenging myself to do so. I'm going to take the summer to work on some pending projects, photographic and otherwise, and learn some new things at Smugmug about photography and processing. I'll keep a gallery of regularly updated photos for the summer, some new and some not, but I don't know if I'll link it here or to any other community for a little while. I'll keep checking back here to see all your great shots though!!!

  • Green Heron

(June 29) A passerby told me this was a black crowned night-heron, but it doesn't look like any of the photos of the species on-line. Thusie correctly identified it for me. Odd bird -- I have many shots of it and none of them look like they are of the same bird. That neck stretches way out, the feathers lie down flat on the head, and if he turns his head, it is very, very, narrow. If you're curious, here are some more shots of it:
• Strut your stuff

(June 28) Actually taken June 29, but I shot nothing on the 28th (meetings, meetings, meetings). This egret was patrolling the water's edge at Fairmount Park.
  • Big ol' mouth

(June 27) Gus is pretty soft mouthed, just likes to wrap those big ol' lips around things. His favorite thing is to see how many toys he can stuff in his mouth at once. His record is three stuffed animals, a shoe, and a sock. The last two items weren't his, nor did they go together either. Between him and Gypsy (who has a shoe fetish), we have to search for our shoes and socks a lot.
  • Apocalypse now?

(June 26) Plastics warehouse fire on my way home. Life's never dull around here.
  • Pensive

(June 25) My five-year-old neighbor and the rose bush he picked out to plant. For all purposes, this child is a regular rough-and-tumble boy, but the camera found the observant, thoughtful kid I see. Not much gets past him. He looks like he's about to go on a growth spurt too. I think he's absorbing Miracle-Gro!
  • Introductions

(June 24) A most polite bee. Life is very cordial around the lavender bush.
  • Siesta

(June 23) This butterfly was taking a little rest on my lavender plant in the afternoon.
  • Dare to be different

(June 22) Not all cacti want to be frilly. This one prefers to be nekked (and spiky).
  • Zen Dog

(June 21) Gus appreciating the joy of the moment: cool grass, a teddy bear, and an audience.
  • Good to the last drop . . .

(June 20) . . . and I saw where she has a nest too, with chicks in it, well hidden in another redwood tree. She's pretty fierce. I saw her chase away three other hummers.
  • More 'maters!!!

(June 19) Today's harvest, and there's tons behind it. Next week we'll be swimming in tomatoes. Right now we're just feeling very proud of ourselves as urban farmers.
  • Bashful?

(June 18, 2007) Two of my favorite things -- something spiky and a hummingbird. This little scruffy scrapper was really curious about my lens and kept looking at it, first one way, then the next, a little closer, then a little further, then a little closer. Then it got into an aerial fight with another hummer and they were gone.
  • Singing the blues

(June 17) From last week at the Fender Museum. These young men looked awfully cheerful for punkers, but they were enjoying the car show and country music. I shot nothing for today.
  • Me and my giant

(June 16) Gypsy and Gus hanging out in the backyard watching the bird feeder. They are the best of buddies. Jim and I caught them chasing around the yard together yesterday.
  • Pomp and Circumstance

(June 15) In this case, it was circumstances rather than pomp. Commencement ceremonies were cancelled for Friday evening at UC Riverside due to threats, a suspicious morning fire, and incendiary devices found nearby. The chairs were cool though. This is from when they were still setting up in the afternoon.

And, hey! The main add photos button worked for me tonight. Yay! First time in over a week. I've been adding photos by reselecting an uploading option or going through the gallery options menu. I don't know what I did right tonight, but it worked.

POSTSCRIPT: The campus and Riverside police arrested a suspect, a former student who lived nearby. The rest of the commencement ceremonies were held without incident.
  • Ahead by a nose

(June 14) Two car shows last weekend -- you don't think that I would walk away without at least one hood ornament shot, did you?
  • Hot licks

(June 13) Flames reflected in a guitar cutout on the hood of a car at the Fender Museum car show last weekend.
  • Flying Colors

(June 12) Yet another from the weekend. I'm such a sucker for this part of every rodeo. He could be carrying a Ronald MacDonald flag, and I'd still fall for it.

It's another hellweek at work, so I'm going to process and post shots from last weekend.
  • Uh oh

(June 11) This isn't the same bull as yesterday's shot but this is what happens next. And then . . . :
You're taking a break and I'm just getting started. I started my photo-a-day the end of May... I'm so new at it that I just realized that I was actually getting comments - the comments have given me so much inspiration! Have a great summer!

Great action shot. Thanks for the feedback you've given as I haven't been at this project for too long. Hope to see you back soon!

I'll certainly miss your daily photos -- especially those car ones! ;-) But I can understand where you're coming from. Enjoy your summer and hope to see you back here soon!

Thanks all! I've learned a ton from this community, so much so that sometimes it made my brain hurt. The DP community has been a fantastic group of photonuts and lensgeeks with whom to "train." I've got a long way to go; I just want to cross-train a bit and make my brain squint in different ways. Happy shooting this summer. I know I'll be seeing awesome photos from you all.

You go girl! Do what it takes to keep things fresh. The comments about your improvement over the past year are a great encouragement to this newcomer. This shot is very powerful, as are many of your images.
