  • Shake it off<br /> <br /> (Dec. 11, 2010) Gracey returns from a run through the brush and shakes off the debris. Either that or she's transforming herself. We adopted her a year ago today, and she has transformed into a tougher, more confident, and infinitely sillier dog.
  • Tree ornament<br /> <br /> (Dec. 10, 2010) Winter in Riverside is a lot like fall elsewhere.
  • Sweet Dreams<br /> <br /> (Dec. 9, 2010) Our granddaughter Austyn at 4 days old.
  • Up to no good<br /> <br /> (Dec. 8, 2010) I don't know which one of them is the most likely to get into trouble. They are really double trouble as far as I am concerned. Gracey had something that looked remarkably like a cactus spine removed from her ear canal yesterday, but she had recovered her moxie by this evening.
  • Urban Wildlife<br /> <br /> (Dec. 7, 2010) An egret at the Fairmount Park lake outlet watching for breakfast to come by.
  • Look what the stork brought!<br /> <br /> (Dec. 5-6, 2010) Our granddaughter was born late last night, with a head of red hair, an opinion about the world and a healthy set of lungs. Congratulations, Samantha & Paul! Now you are three (plus a passel of family). This morning, I saw the western version of a stork heading home.
  • Culture mash<br /> <br /> (Dec. 4, 2010) Today was the annual procession of the Virgin de Guadalupe up Mount Rubidoux. The figure of La Virgin was preceded by priests, altar boys, dancers and drums, and followed by flags, a mariachi band, and a host of devotees. It was a lot to take in.
  • Western Dance<br /> <br /> (Dec. 3, 2010) I think I saw this in a square dancing class once. <br /> <br /> Thanks for all the comments this week. I haven't been able to reciprocate the last couple of days, but will try to catch up this weekend.
  • Ready, Aim . . .<br /> <br /> (Dec. 2, 2010) I'm finally going back to finish processing the San Bernardino rodeo shots (better late than never!) and came across this shot of one of Gene (Hyderphotos) executing one of his nimbler moves - one handed too! Way to go, Gene!
  • Heading home<br /> <br /> (Dec. 1, 2010) I went to look for the Canadian Geese that are passing through, but found the same old egrets instead. Highlights are blown, I know. I struggle a little with whites in dusk light. This is with the ec cranked down a bit, but not enough.
  • Gracey, here!<br /> <br /> (Nov. 30, 2010) And here's the little bundle of trouble herself, taken last Sunday after she rested up with that long nap but before she rustled up the bobcat. Here she was returning from trying to dig up a squirrel.
  • Really, really, REALLY annoyed wildlife<br /> <br /> (November 29, 2010) Dang Gracey surprised a bobcat that was sunning itself this morning and chased it up a tree. Just about gave us all -- bobcat, me, Gracey -- a heart attack. That cat was twice Gracey's size and not happy at all.
  • Thanksgiving's done<br /> <br /> (November 28, 2010) The pie's gone, the holiday is over.

  • Hey, where'd the water go?<br /> <br /> (November 25, 2010) We went up to Apple Valley, the "high desert" area, for Thanksgiving dinner, and I came across this incongruous sight of a heron walking in an abandoned development. In truth, everything looks out of place in this shot -- from the development and trees in the desert to the flotsam and piles of debris, with a marsh bird walking among it.
  • An unexpected gift<br /> <br /> (November 24, 2010) Sometimes nature and life gives one an unexpected glorious moment. This was the view from the parking lot at UC Riverside when I left the office, and I am grateful for it. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
  • Hunting the wild bagel<br /> <br /> (November 23, 2010) Gracey disappeared for a moment this morning, and I assumed she went after a squirrel. However, she returned proudly carrying 3/4s of a huge jalapeño cheese bagel. It took a little bit of convincing to get her to exchange it for a dog biscuit. Ah, the life of a an urban cattle dog. Next time I'm going to send her out to rustle up a non-fat latte.
  • Hovercraft<br /> <br /> (November 22, 2010) This hawk was using a stiff wind to do some hovering.
  • Apple of my eye<br /> <br /> (November 21, 2010) We went up to Oak Glen today for apples. It was snowing!
