• And down the track she goes!

(June 9) Drag races from the Old Farts Racing Team's reunion at Fairmount Park yesterday.
  • Capturing the action

(June 8) Rodeo photographer in action. It's a tough job, as noted below. Here's an alternative crop that I like a little better, with a link to how the shot that he's shooting might have turned out:
• Going for the goal

(June 7) More soccer today. Green trounced red. this looked a little like a soccer dream to me.
  • Pick me, pick me

(June 6) Our baby apricot tree is an overachiever. We need to train it to strive more for mediocrity.
  • ready, aim, . . .

(June 5) I went outside to annoy the wildlife instead today. This egret was the only one I found at Fairmount Park. Since Lake Evans was dredged, I've noticed that most of the wild birds are gone. It's just ducks and geese that are left. The cormorants, coots, egrets, and herons have left for other places -- wish I knew which ones.
  • Another annoyed pet

(June 4) Yeah, well, it's their job. Gus thought he'd get out of being photographed by refusing to lie down anywhere where there was light. So I pulled out my high powered gear and staff -- meaning that Jim pointed a flashlight at him for me. What a guy.
  • Gimme that camera . . .

(June 3) . . . and stop taking desperation shots! This was it for today. No time for photos today, so I resorted to torturing the pets to get a daily photo.
  • The New West

(June 2) Riders at Hidden Valley Nature Reserve, Norco, CA
  • If you look real close, you can see who manufactured the ball

(June 1) Another one from yesterday. This young man was also an outstanding player.
  • Shades of Péle

(May 31) A friend asked if I would take some shots of his son's team, which he also coaches. This was one of the young men on the team. I learned a lot about taking soccer shots (for instance, focus on the player, not the ball), but the learning curve was not long enough for me to get a shot like this of all the team players. I'll give it another shot next weekend.
  • Wet duck

(May 30) Apparently the saying "like water off a duck's back," doesn't refer to this guy, or has a different meaning than I thought. Look like water sticks to him like glue.
  • Reeling in a big one

(May 29) Kids at Fairmount Park.
  • Crucifix

(May 28) Jim dedicated tonight's Aikido class to Rowdy, our Aikido family friend who passed last Sunday. She liked control holds, chokes, and basic grappling, not necessarily Aikido-like. This technique, called The Crucifix, was one of her favorites. The end is a knock-out blow to the temple with an elbow. We didn't practice that part.
  • Irrisistable

(May 27) Downtown Riverside needs a skate park. Right now the courthouse has the best skating features around and is irrisistable to the kids.
  • Someone to remember

(May 26) Solitary contemplation at the Evergreen Cemetery (which seldom is). Jim and I are remembering a friend that passed away yesterday. Godspeed, Rowdy.
  • Tadaa!

(May 25) And then he falls down. Any questions?

Danielle Smith Sensei demonstrates a kokyu technique at the Aikido Ai retreat. Inside the dojo it was much warmer . . . as long as you were moving.
  • Welcome to sunny Southern California

(May 24) We went up to the annual Aikido Ai retreat at the Mt. Baldy Zen Center. Last week this area was under fire watch, and down in the "lowlands" (down the hill) we were suffering from 100 degrees plus weather. Today we froze our a**es off -- literally, since this is just to the left of the portapotties.
  • Trouble-maker

(May 23) I came home to find this Cooper's hawk harassing the sparrows and finches at the bird feeder. He was quite annoyed with me spoiling all his fun.
  • Impenetrable

(May 22) Meeting all day today. This is from yesterday at the UCR Botanic Garden (where I went to show a visitor the campus and walk off some of the hot dogs).

You do these shots SO WELL -- and I've added a whole new level of respect to your skills after my horse-y venture this weekend. While I enjoyed being inside in the shade, I think I need to find an outdoor event to get the shutter speeds I'd like. THis and your shot from two days ago are fantastic! I love to read the expressions on horses' faces.
