Can you see me now?<br /> <br /> (June 27) I had a helluvatime just finding this guy each time to focus. I was playing around with adjusting the focus spot (lizards don't work well with center focus if you're starting with their eye as a key spot, since that means one usually cuts off their tail), but each time I took my eye off of him, it took another half minute or so to find him again. Thank goodness he was in "Be the stick" zen mode.

Can you see me now?

(June 27) I had a helluvatime just finding this guy each time to focus. I was playing around with adjusting the focus spot (lizards don't work well with center focus if you're starting with their eye as a key spot, since that means one usually cuts off their tail), but each time I took my eye off of him, it took another half minute or so to find him again. Thank goodness he was in "Be the stick" zen mode.

  • A family resemblance<br /> <br /> (June 27) Mama duck and offspring -- not quite ducklings, not quite ducks -- at Rancho Jurupa Park, Rubidoux, CA. This is a lesson learned, and I am a slow learner (or lazy). I shot this on manual, way too dark on a sunny 8 setting (ISO200, f8, 1/800s) by mistake, in that that is my default manual setting and I adjust from there. Even so, with some recovery in pp, the exposure and detail are better than similar shots taken right after this on AV priority. I need to learn to do this on purpose.

  • Tuff stuff<br /> <br /> (June 26) These guys are very territorial. He considered taking me on too. I went hunting bigger game at the UCR Botanic Garden again today but ended up with the small fry instead. That's why I'm using the 300mm as a macro again.

  • Third generation<br /> <br /> (June 24) The great-granddaughter of Don Augustín on the day of a fiesta. She is now grown and married. Sigh.
  • Read the instructions<br /> <br /> (June 23) Same family, two generations down, also circa 1989. These are the grandsons of the gentleman from yesterday, the new patriarchs. They are reading the instructions for installing a solar panel. They are also the family that have been the portal for conservation and research activities in the area.
  • The Patriarch<br /> <br /> (June 22) I'm slowly scanning/digitizing some of the photographs from when I lived in Mexico. This was taken the summer of 1988 or the winter of 1989 with a point and shoot Olympus camera that survived many adventures. It is of Don Augustín, who lived in this area of northern Mexico all his life. He was 10 when Pancho Villa's troops came through the hacienda on their way to take Torreón and Gómez Palacio. His mother hid him under the bed so that the Villistas wouldn't take him with them. I learned a lot of the region's history from this man, but a lot was lost as neither I nor his grandsons always understood him.
  • Apparently happiness does grow on trees<br /> <br /> (June 22) Who knew? This is a rare Helium kitschei tree with fully ripe fruit.
  • Staring down the wind<br /> <br /> (June 2) Taken a while back but processed today.
  • A fine mess<br /> <br /> (June 19) Yes, quite a mess, but we have AIR CONDITIONING today. It was 109F outside, and Jim decided to join the 21st century. He and a friend spent the day in the attic putting in the duct work and basically giving themselves heat exhaustion. It's been too insane here and at work to shoot or comment on the community's daily photos. I apologize -- I'll try to catch up next week when things lighten up a bit.
  • No photographers were harmed in the making of this shot<br /> <br /> (June 18) From last Saturday, processed today. The rider was fine. I don't quite know why the photographer isn't shooting.
  • Natural stick pin<br /> <br /> (June 17) Okay, I'll be G-rated today, but I still took this with the 300mm.
  • Bad, bad, bad<br /> <br /> (June 16) Yes, I was bad. I used the 300mm as a macro again.
  • The Physics of Superheroes<br /> <br /> (June 15) This was taken by me somewhere between 30-35 years ago, I think, but planned out completely by my dad. This is an old scan of old photos, pieced together today into the original sequence, so forgive the quality. My dad originally built the cavalletti for my horses. A family friend was very impressed by that and wanted a photo of them to find out what they looked like. So my dad thought it would be great to get a sequence of him jumping them. He had me take a photo of him running toward the cavalletti stacked up and then running away from them. Then we took the top one off, put it on the ground, where it was about two feet high, and took a picture of him jumping it from the perspective of the ground. My mom put them together and sent them to our friend, telling her that this was how to use the cavalletti properly. My dad's a superhero, as you can see, and a physicist. I only hope I inherited some of his creativity and sense of humour. Happy Father's Day, Papa!
  • Girls rule!<br /> <br /> (June 14) We went to see the flat track races at Perris Speedway, first time there in 4 years apparently. The crowd got up on their feet and cheered when this 16 year old young lady left the boys in the dust. I couldn't seem to get a shot of her between the posts (timing, timing, timing).
  • Lead dog<br /> <br /> (June 13) A different kind of dog today.
  • War Dog Memorial, March Air Field Museum<br /> <br /> (June 12) I was out at the museum for a memorial service and reminded of how moving this monument to the service of war dogs is. Each tile below is a tribute to someone's dog or a war dog, some of whom were left behind in Vietnam. It is heartrending to read them.
  • Dress to impress<br /> <br /> (June 11) One of the Mutton Bustin' competitors at the Jurupa Rodeo.

    Good shot. I have little lizards in my yard but they never sit still long enough for a portrait.
