Holiday cheer

 • Ready for her close-up

(Nov. 29) I'm beginning to feel that these are my two ravens, as they have taken over the area and building where I work. This one was very curious about the sound of the camera shutter:
• Ships that pass in the night (or day)

(Nov. 28) The ducks are still in the horse pasture. It's a bit of an interspecies mix all the way around.
 • My very favorite berry ever

(Nov. 26) This sparrow was very excited about the berry he picked.
 • Phainopepla?

(Nov. 25) Bird ID needed. There are several variations of this bird along the Santa Ana riverbottom. They run from blacker than this one to a dusky, reddish brown.
 • Knock it off, will ya?!

(Nov. 24) Rancho Jurupa Park -- this cormorant was spashing about, and from all appearances, his companions were not amused.
 • Then and now

(Nov. 23) We went to visit Jim's parents today. His dad was a medical photographer for the Navy and took some amazing photos. He was showing me Jim's mom's wedding photo, which he had colored by hand(!). Jim's mom has Alzheimer's and memories are slipping away from her fast. However, she still relates to the photos. Btw, the next shot she stuck her tongue out at me and winked, so we know she's in there somewhere.
 • Bounty hunter

(Nov. 22) No photos today; it's a photo holiday around here. Instead, here's a goldfinch from Monday or Tuesday (can't remember) giving thanks for the bounty of weeds in the botanic garden.
 • Duck

(Nov. 21) Somebody said they wanted a duck shot the other day, so here you go.
 • Comfort food

(Nov. 20) It is boys' night out tonight, which means it's girls' night in and I can eat whatever I please wherever I want. Yes, I always stand on the chair to contemplate my food before eating it. Actually I was taking a test shot in RAW to see if the Adobe update plug-in for the 40D would work. And while we're at it, does anyone know a 3-letter word for a traffic-stopping organization?
 • Come on in and sit a while.

(Nov. 19) This bench in the UCR Botanic Garden looked so inviting and tranquil.
 • Egret Quest

(Nov. 18) No, I'm not trying to sound like Elmer Fudd. I've been trying to get the exposure right on an egret for a year now. This is closer than usual, as the feathers on the bottom are visible. The top is still burned out. It's good to have goals.
 • Into the wild green yonder

(Nov. 17) Soft, I know. I still have not mastered low light, flying birds, and the 300mm all together. This is as close to in focus as I got for the day.
 • Pay no attention to the person behind the door.

(Nov. 16) An alternative caption for this is, "And then he falls down. Any questions?" We had to move our Aikido dojo to a new location after our previous location was condemned under eminent domain for a railroad underpass. We've moved to a dance studio, where we can use one of the private rooms, and everyone is feeling very spoiled: new mats, well cared for facility, and air conditioning! And fake trees and columns too. (I'll clone myself out before I put this in the dojo gallery, but it's kind of fun for here.)
 • Calm is but an illusion

(Nov. 15) I have zip, nada, nothing for today, so here's a fall portrait of pure trouble from Monday.
 • Don't touch

(Nov. 14) It felt like a good day for spiky things.
 • Car alarm

(Nov. 13) The jag hoodie was on a Ford. I don't know if that is sacrilege or irreverence. I'm leaning toward the latter. Jim says it's a corporate statement, since Ford owned Jaguar for a while. I didn't know that. If it's a statement, it's lost on the majority of the population like me. And if you want to know what kind of a Ford, it was a purple one.
 • Left, left, left-right-left! Keep ahead of the kilts, lads.

(Nov. 12) I love a local parade, since they seldom make much sense. These were local minute men militia followed by the UCR Highlanders (Scottish veterans?) all marching down the Flabob Airport runway.
 • Way to go!

(Nov. 11) Today was the annual Mission Inn run, and this family was standing at the top of the last hill for the 10K cheering everyone on. The little 4 year old was the most enthusiastic, telling the runners, "Way to go! You're almost there! It's the home stretch! Relax those arms! C'mon, way to go!" He was telling some of the runners in the middle that they could still win, but his dad stopped him ("Actually they can't, buddy."), so he said, "oh yeah," and went back to, "Way to go!"
 • Thumbs up

(Nov. 10) We went to the Flabob Airport Veteran's Day Air and Car Show. They had a small parade down the runway, and this little boy was most taken by the firetruck. The firefighters were equally taken with him.
