Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > New Sheriff in Town

(Sept. 30, 2009) This is the new Sheriff of San Bernardino and, by default, the SB Country Sheriff's Rodeo. His deputies were giving me a hard time about trying to get a photo of him falling off and them catching him. He didn't look like he was even close to falling off though.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > A little higher please

(Sept. 29, 2009) Not the best shot, but it is to illustrate that a certain dp community member in a green shirt, whose name I won't mention but whose initials are Gene Hyder, needs to climb a rung or two higher on the fence. Look closely at where the bronc's hind hooves are and feel free to tell him so. ;-)
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > 8 second ride

(Sept. 28, 2009) This is from the backside of the bucking chutes, behind all those cowboy hats from the shot two days ago.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Take your best shot

(Sept. 27, 2009) I had two photo events today, and this was the first -- the PBR Dickies Invitational in Ontario, CA. The bullfighters provide the bulls with a good shot to distract them from going after the cowboys when they buck off.

Long day/weekend -- thanks for all the comments on yesterday's photo. I'll catch up with the community shots tomorrow.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > 1 second

(Sept. 26, 2009) One second into an eight second ride . . . well, more like a four second ride and cowboy catapult. At f2.8 (not shooting with flash), only the bull's head was really in focus, so I put a filter and bw treatment on it. It was more the feeling of the rodeo than the literal representation of it.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Cruisin'

(Sept. 25, 2009) I've been wanting to do a series of arms-out-the-car-window for a while. We went to the Route 66 Rendezvous car show in San Bernardino last Sunday and I got a start on it.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > I feel pretty, oh so pretty, . . .

(Sept. 24, 2009) Great Blue Heron preening a bit at Fairmount Park
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > And the winner is . . . .

(Sept. 23, 2009) Last barrel racing shot for now. This was the winner from last Saturday.

It's been a little hectic here -- I apologize for not commenting on community photos. I'll try to catch up tomorrow.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Party Animal

(Sept. 22, 2009) Last weekend's competition was a luau event, and the horses dressed accordingly.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Separation anxiety

(Sept. 21, 2009) I wonder if this is what a nightmare looks like for a horse.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > I just found this doggie over there . . .

(Sept. 20, 2009) I was shooting a barrel racing event yesterday. This small competitor in the PeeWee Division had the best time riding around the warm-up arena with her dog. If she looks familiar, she's the little girl from the All Girls Rodeo two weekends ago:

Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Bente at 15

(Sept. 19, 2009) My parents' dog -- she still has a bit of spring in her step. Here she is four years ago:

Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Be One with the Sheep

(September 18, 2009) The audience around where we were sitting started calling this dog "The Zamboni," since he came out to pick up the flock after each run and return them to a pen.

If you want to see more shots from the semi-finals, they are now in a gallery here:

The first shot is of Sly, two-time former champ and the reserve champion this year.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Wild and Wooly

(Sept. 17, 2009) Lest you think that the sheepdog trials are confined to a grassy demonstration area, this shot shows some of the additional terrain at Meeker. These are yearling ewes, who come in from the range only the day before the competition. They are used to defending themselves.

The "lift," where the dogs pick up their flock for their run, is already a quarter mile from where the dogs start and the shepherds remain. The dogs have to herd the flock back to the start post through a gate about 1/8th of a mile out, and then take them back out to another two gates before returning the five ewes to the start to pen/shed them. The orange collars indicate which sheep should or should not be separated out before and after the penning. All of this has to be done within 16 minutes -- the dogs are pretty tired by the end.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Lie down!

(Sept. 16, 2009) This is one the reasons we were out of town last weekend -- the Meeker Sheepdog Trials. This is one small part of the course, where the shepherd and dog have to separate out two of the sheep. I include it because, for those of you who know them, you can see my parents in the audience in the right hand corner, one on either side of the fence post.
